WHO IS SUSAN MOTT?
I was born in London, England and immigrated with my parents to Toronto, Canada when I was 11 years old.
I spent three years in Boston before moving to Montreal in the year 2000. The history and architecture of Boston and the charm and spirit of Montreal have brought me back to my passion for art.
Dating back to my early childhood, I always had a love of the creative arts, history and architecture. I learned about shadows and shading from my father at age 7. This passion developed during my early teens and I took my formal training at the “Ontario College of Art”. I continued my studies at “George Brown Technical College” in Design and later at “Ryerson University” for Architectural Technology.
With my move to Montreal 8 years ago I knew I had to satisfy my own needs and passion, to develop my natural abilities and creativity. To that end, I walk the neighbourhoods of Montreal, observing and sketching the architecture. I take every opportunity to visit museums, art galleries and churches on my many travels.
I continually observe existing works of art and artists, human emotions and their environment. I have a great admiration for the works of the “Masters”. Turner for his use of subtle colour to achieve atmosphere, Constable for his attention to the details of country life, the ancient Chinese artists for their simplicity, the 15th C Dutch school of artists for their sense of everyday mood and Christopher Wren for his abundant architectural construction after the Great Fire of London.
My inspiration comes from people and the places they inhabit, whether it is a building or a landscape. I take great pleasure in passing on my knowledge of art by teaching watercolour - at my home and in group classes throughout Montreal.
All of my experiences, both professional and personal go into my watercolours and that gives me great pleasure and satisfaction. I am happiest when painting; bringing out the feelings that my chosen subjects invoke. My watercolour paintings capture: “Instances in Time, Memories and Feelings.” That others can experience the joy I feel in my work is a bonus!
More to come!
